Back Of The Pack: An Iditarod Rookie Musher's Alaska Pilgrimage to Nome by Don Bowers tells the story of a pilot and teacher who lived his dream by running the Iditarod.  With no mushing experience and little money, Don started from scratch to put together a team.   Don's adventure is a true-life example of learning how to "Dream big and dare to fail".

 

The Father of the Iditarod:  The Joe Reddington Story by Lew Freedman  details the life and times of the founder of the "Last Great Race"  -- The Iditarod.  When many said it couldn't be done, the homesteader, pilot, and visionary dog musher rescued dog mushing from extinction with a little help from his friends.

 

Race Arcoss Alaska:  First woman to win the Iditarod by Libby Riddles and Tim Jones chronicles the challenges faced by the 1985 Iditarod champion.  The Wisconsin born Riddles was 16 when she moved to Alaska in 1972.  Thirteen years later, she emrged from a raging blizzard to win the dog sled race from Anchorage to Nome.

  

Iditarod Dreams:  A Year In The Life of Alaska Sled Dog Racer DeeDee Jonrowe by Lew Freedman and DeeDee Jonrowe relays the details of DeeDee's 1993 second place finish in the Last Great Race through the 1994 Iditarod.

 

Iditarod:   The Great Race To Nome with text by Bill Sherwonit and photography by Jeff Schultz is an updated version of one of the best selling books ever about "The Big Trail".  With 100 photographs including 80 in color, the text covers the history of the Iditarod from the original serum run to Nome in 1925 to some of the race's most exciting events.

 

THe Iditarod Fact Book:  A Complete Guide To The Last Great Race by Sue Mattson details the race, the people, and the dogs as well as presenting information about gear and places.

  

Racing the White Silence:  On the Trail of the Yukon Quest by Adam Killick tells the incredible story of the participants (such as William Kleedehn, Joran Freeman and David Sawatsky) their dogs, and the pyschological and physical challenges endured.

 

Running North: A Yukon Adventure by Ann Mariah Cook looks back at her seven-month odyssey of training for and then running in the Yukon Quest.   After years of competing in the northeastern U.S, Cook her husband, and their three year old daughter travelled north along with 33 purebred huskies. 

 

Yukon Alone:  The World's Toughest Adventure Race by John Balzar gives an insight into the men and women who have journeyed north for the sense of exhilaration and adventure on the trail between Fairbanks and Whitehorse.
